Our Mission: Using & Advancing Proven Nuclear Technology
An experimental Molten Salt Reactor was built and successfully tested in the 1960s at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In fact, had Cold War-era governments not preferred Light Water Reactors for their plutonium production (in order to power nuclear weapons), Molten Salt Reactors might be widely used today.
Today, efforts to develop safer nuclear power plants with fewer spent fuel disposal issues have led researchers back to the successful tests of the 1960s.
The lessons learned at Oak Ridge, combined with more recent research, provide a proven foundation for the development and commercialization of the next generation of molten salt nuclear power plants.
