Overview:
Focus: corrosion, metallurgy, chemical interactions with molten salts, materials selection.
Responsible for selecting materials, predicting corrosion rates, and developing life-extending strategies for components exposed to molten fluoride or chloride salts at high temperatures.
Qualifications:
- Required
- B.S./M.S./Ph.D. in Materials Science, Metallurgy, or Chemical Engineering
- Deep understanding of:
- High-temperature nickel alloys (Hastelloy, Inconel, SS316L, etc.)
- Creep rupture, grain growth, sensitization
- Corrosion mechanisms in molten salts (e.g., FLiBe, FLiNaK, chlorides)
- Salt-metal redox chemistry and oxygen control
- Ability to interpret or generate:
- Creep curves, stress-rupture data, Larson–Miller parameters
- Corrosion-kinetics data
- Compatibility assessments between alloys and salt species
- Experience with high-temp test methods:
- Salt corrosion rigs
- Tensile/fatigue testing at temperature
- Post-corrosion metallography
- Preferred
- Experience with molten-salt reactor systems, CSP systems, or chemical-salt handling
- Knowledge of getters, redox control, and salt purification
- Familiarity with ASME materials sections (II-D, II-Part C)
- PE License
